A’bao, a 30-year-old painter from China, tragically passed away in June after working continuously for 104 days with only one day off. Employed on a strict contract since February 2023, A’bao developed a severe lung infection due to the grueling work schedule in Zhoushan, Zhejiang province.
On May 25, A’bao fell seriously ill and was hospitalized with respiratory failure just three days later. Despite receiving treatment, he died soon after. His family filed a lawsuit, accusing his employer of negligence and overwork. Initially, Social Security officials dismissed the claim, stating his death was not work-related.
However, a court later ruled that the company was 20% responsible for A’bao’s death, citing excessive work hours as a violation of Chinese labor laws. The court awarded the family 400,000 yuan in compensation. The company defended its stance, claiming the extra hours were voluntary and that A’bao delayed seeking medical help.
