Five people lost their lives, and over 100 were hospitalized after being exposed to extreme heat during an Indian Air Force airshow in Chennai on Sunday. The large crowd gathered along a beach under the blazing sun, faced temperatures soaring to 35°C (95°F).

The intense heat, combined with overcrowding, led to the tragic deaths. Scorching temperatures are common in India, but scientific research has shown that climate change is intensifying heat waves, making them longer, more frequent, and more severe.

Earlier this year, parts of India experienced record-breaking temperatures, surpassing 50°C. Lawmaker Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, from the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party, called the reports of the deaths “painful.”
