ICC World Cup 2023: Super Overs To Replace Boundary Count-Back Rule For Tied Games

Source: ESPNcricinfo

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has introduced a significant and much-awaited change in the way tied games will be decided in the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023. In a move aimed at ensuring fairness and excitement, the ICC has decided to replace the controversial boundary count-back rule with Super Overs.

How it was done till now…

Previously, when a One Day International (ODI) match ended in a tie, the team with more boundaries in their innings was declared the winner. However, this method faced backlash and criticism, particularly after the dramatic 2019 World Cup final, where the outcome was determined by this boundary count-back rule.

Under the new regulations, Super Overs will serve as the primary means of resolving tied games. If the initial Super Over also ends in a tie, additional Super Overs will be played until a decisive winner emerges. This change, proposed by the ICC Cricket Committee and approved by the Chief Executives’ Committee, will not only apply to the ODI World Cup but also to the T20I World Cup.
