Recent incidents involving the safety of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding chairman Imran Khan and former Punjab chief minister and PTI President Pervaiz Elahi, have raised concerns about the Punjab government’s ability to protect inmates in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail.
Jail safety concerns escalate
The government’s decision to restrict visitors due to ‘security threats’ has come under scrutiny. Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s information adviser suggested that Imran Khan should be handed over to his provincial set-up if the Punjab government cannot ensure his safety.
In a separate incident, Pervaiz Elahi suffered a bone fracture while in Adiala Jail after slipping into the jail’s washroom. The medical report of his injury was presented in court during the hearing of a case against him. The case was related to illegal recruitment in the Punjab Assembly.
The PTI has long been critical of the Punjab government’s handling of Imran Khan’s case, accusing them of using underhanded tactics to keep him incarcerated. This latest move to restrict visitors to the jail has only added fuel to the fire, raising concerns about Khan’s safety.
