The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has called on the federal government to declare its founder, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, a national democratic hero. The resolution was passed during a recent seminar and comes after the Supreme Court acknowledged that Bhutto’s trial, which resulted in his execution in 1979, was unfair.

The PPP’s resolution seeks several recognitions for Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. This includes placing his image on Pakistani currency, awarding him the title of “Quaid-e-Awam” (Leader of the People), and bestowing upon him the Nishan-e-Pakistan, the country’s highest civilian honor.
Additionally, the resolution urges the construction of a national monument in his honor and the designation of his mausoleum as a national shrine. Furthermore, the PPP demands the reversal of Bhutto’s death sentence and the establishment of a “Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Award” to recognize democracy activists who have made significant sacrifices.

This move follows the National Assembly’s resolution passed in March that declared Bhutto’s trial a judicial murder. The Supreme Court’s recent decision on a presidential reference acknowledged that Bhutto did not receive a fair trial, a verdict hailed by the PPP and legal experts as a correction of a historic injustice.
