Karachi Heatwave Claims Lives: Over 100 Bodies Brought To Morgue In Three Days

Source: Los Angeles Times

Karachi is reeling under the grip of a scorching heatwave, with reports of a significant rise in deaths attributed to the extreme temperatures. A social organization, the Chhipa Foundation, has revealed that over 100 bodies were brought to their morgues in the last three days alone.

“The heatwave is taking a devastating toll on the city”, stated a spokesperson for the Chhipa Foundation. “We received 37 bodies on June 23rd, 44 on June 24th, and 19 on June 25th”, highlighting the sharp increase in deaths.

The organization further confirmed that a significant number of the deceased, 36 to be exact, remain unidentified.

In response to the crisis, the government has announced the establishment of 77 heatwave centers across seven districts of Karachi. These centers will provide much-needed relief in the form of cold water and Sharbat (a sweet and cooling drink) to help residents cope with the scorching temperatures.

The distribution of essential services is further bolstered by Paramilitary Rangers setting up heatstroke camps in various locations throughout the city. Additionally, these camps will have medical staff readily available to offer treatment to those suffering from heatstroke.

The government has outlined the specific distribution of these centers, with 11 centers set up in Karachi South, 18 in Karachi East, and so on, ensuring widespread access to this critical relief.

With temperatures remaining dangerously high, residents of Karachi are urged to exercise extreme caution. Staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to sunlight, and seeking shelter in cool spaces are crucial measures to protect oneself from the effects of the heatwave.
