UN Demands Immediate Release Of Imran Khan, Labels Detention ‘Arbitrary’

Source: Al Jazeera

The United Nations has urged Pakistan to release former Prime Minister Imran Khan immediately, declaring his detention as ‘arbitrary’ and against international law. A UN human rights group emphasized that Khan’s imprisonment violated international standards and called for his swift release.

In response, Pakistan’s Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar stated on Tuesday that the arrest and legal proceedings against Khan are purely domestic issues. Tarar highlighted that Pakistan operates as a sovereign nation where judicial processes and constitutional matters are handled independently.

Tarar affirmed that Khan is serving his sentence as per lawful conviction and is entitled to all rights under both national and international laws. He pointed out that the fair treatment of Khan in various legal cases demonstrates Pakistan’s commitment to transparent and impartial justice, adhering to both constitutional principles and international norms.

Earlier, the US State Department also commented on the matter, describing Khan’s detention as an internal affair for Pakistan. During a recent press briefing, Vedant Patel, Principal Deputy Spokesperson of the State Department, acknowledged the UN’s statement but deferred to the UN for further details, stating that the US has no further comments on the situation.
