South Korea has extended an offer of humanitarian aid to North Korea following severe floods that have devastated thousands of homes and farmlands. Despite the tense relations between the two nations, South Korea’s Unification Ministry announced its willingness to provide supplies to alleviate the “humanitarian difficulties” faced by North Korean residents.
The ministry has urged North Korea’s Red Cross to engage in discussions to determine the types and amounts of aid needed, as well as the delivery method. However, North Korea has yet to respond to this proposal.
Recent heavy rains have left significant damage in the northwestern city of Sinuiju and the neighboring town of Uiju, flooding 4,100 houses and 7,410 acres of agricultural land. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, in an emergency Politburo meeting, has called for strict punishment of those responsible for inadequate disaster prevention measures.

This outreach by South Korea comes amid heightened animosity due to North Korea’s nuclear ambitions and South Korea’s military collaborations with the United States and Japan.
