Vera Liddell, a 68-year-old ex-food service director for Harvey School District 152 in Illinois, has been sentenced to nine years in prison for a $1.5 million theft. Liddell, who held her position for nearly two years, was found guilty of fraudulently ordering over 11,000 cases of chicken wings, which she falsely billed to the district.

The fraudulent activities occurred during the remote learning period when students were not in school. The scheme came to light during a routine audit when the district’s business manager discovered a severe budget discrepancy in the food service department. This audit revealed that Liddell had misused district funds that were intended for student nutrition.

Liddell’s actions have been condemned for undermining public trust and diverting essential resources away from the educational support meant for children. The sentencing marks a significant response to the misappropriation of school funds and highlights the importance of vigilant financial oversight in educational institutions.
