In recent news, a woman was tragically killed in Karachi on Friday as the city faced heavy rains and strong winds, part of the severe weather conditions caused by the potential cyclone named ‘Asna.’

The cyclone, which formed along the Sindh coastline, was located approximately 170 kilometers east-southeast of Karachi, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

Earlier in the day, the PMD issued an alert, warning that the deep depression over the Arabian Sea was likely to intensify into a Cyclonic Storm (CS) by the afternoon or evening — a rare phenomenon for the month of August.

As the weather worsened, heavy rains and stormy winds began lashing Karachi in the afternoon, leading to reports of infrastructure damage across the city.

One of the most tragic incidents occurred on Stadium Road, where a woman lost her life after a tree fell on her, according to Rescue 1122 officials.

The PMD had cautioned that the heavy rains could lead to waterlogging and flooding in low-lying areas along the Sindh-Makran coast. The sea conditions were also expected to remain rough, with winds reaching speeds of 50-60 km/h, gusting up to 70 km/h.

The formation of a cyclonic storm over the Arabian Sea in August is a rare event, with the last occurrence dating back to 1964.
