For the first time in UK history, the name Muhammad has become the most popular baby boy name, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The Arabic name has surpassed Noah, now ranked second, while Oliver holds the third spot.
The latest data, published by The Telegraph, revealed that 4,661 boys born in England and Wales in 2023 were named Muhammad, an increase from 4,177 in 2022. In comparison, 4,382 babies were named Noah this year, down from 4,586 last year.
The name Muhammad, meaning “praiseworthy” or “commendable,” originates from the Arabic word “hammada,” meaning “to praise.” It is a name of great significance in the Muslim world, famously borne by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the messenger of Islam.

For baby girls, Olivia retained its position as the most popular name for the eighth consecutive year, followed by Amelia and Isla in second and third place, respectively.
