Google Employs Camel to Capture Desert Street View for Google Maps

Source: Traveler

Google has taken an innovative step to expand its Street View feature by employing a camel named Raffia to capture 360-degree images of Abu Dhabi’s desert. This unique approach was designed to navigate the challenging terrain of the Liwa Oasis, known for its vast sand dunes.

Raffia carried Google’s Trekker camera, traditionally operated by humans, making her the first camel to take part in such a project. Google chose this method for its minimal environmental impact and the camel’s natural ability to traverse the shifting sands.

Monica Baz, a Google spokesperson, highlighted the significance of this effort, stating, “Using a camel allowed us to document this beautiful region in an authentic and sustainable way.”

The Liwa Oasis is home to some of the largest sand dunes in the world, making it a fitting location for this creative initiative. The imagery captured offers users a glimpse of the desert’s unique beauty.

This project joins Google’s previous Street View expeditions to iconic sites such as Mount Everest and the Grand Canyon, showcasing the company’s dedication to making remote and breathtaking locations accessible to everyone.

Raffia’s journey reflects Google’s commitment to combining advanced technology with sustainable practices to explore and share the world’s hidden wonders.
