Iranian singer Parastoo Ahmadi has been arrested for defying the country’s strict hijab laws during a virtual concert streamed on YouTube. The 27-year-old artist performed in a long, sleeveless black dress without a hijab, sparking both praise and controversy.
Ahmadi shared the performance, which has garnered over 1.4 million views, with the caption: “I am Parastoo, a girl who wants to sing for the people I love. This is a right I could not ignore, singing for the land I love passionately.”
Her lawyer, Milad Panahipour, confirmed her arrest in northern Iran on Saturday. Two other musicians from her band were also detained at their music studio in Tehran. Panahipour stated, “Unfortunately, we do not know the charges against Ms. Ahmadi, who arrested her, or her place of detention. We will pursue this through legal channels.”

Ahmadi’s arrest highlights the ongoing tension surrounding women’s rights in Iran, particularly since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. In 2022, mass protests erupted following the custodial death of Jina Mahsa Amini, leading to widespread calls for reform.
Many Iranian women continue to oppose the mandatory hijab laws, reflecting broader discontent with restrictive societal norms. Ahmadi’s case has reignited debates about freedom of expression in Iran.
