Dinosaurs Lost Intelligence Over Time – Could Humans Be Next? Study Warns

Source: Scientific American

A recent study led by Chinese researchers has revealed a decline in intelligence and sensory abilities among dinosaurs over millions of years, offering a thought-provoking parallel for humans in the modern, technology-reliant era.

The study, published in Paleobiology, examined the evolution of ceratopsians, a group of herbivorous dinosaurs known for their frills and horns. Early ceratopsians, such as Psittacosaurus, walked on two legs and relied on acute senses like hearing and smell to evade predators. Over 100 million years, these dinosaurs grew larger, developed armor-like features, and transitioned to walking on four legs, as seen in species like Triceratops.

Using CAT scans to reconstruct the brain sizes of dinosaur fossils, researchers found that the need for sensory sharpness diminished as ceratopsians became less vulnerable to predators. “When functions that helped dinosaurs stay vigilant were not used as frequently, they degraded,” explained study author Han Fenglu.

Han cautioned that humans might face similar evolutionary consequences if over-reliance on technology leads to diminished sensory and cognitive abilities. “Dinosaurs couldn’t control their evolution, but humans can manage their behaviors to maintain sharpness,” he noted.

This study serves as a reminder to balance technological advances with efforts to preserve essential skills and natural abilities.
