Indian Women Hold 11% of Global Gold Reserves, Surpassing Major Nations

Indian women collectively own an estimated 24,000 tons of gold, accounting for 11% of the world’s total gold reserves in jewelry form, according to the World Gold Council. This remarkable figure surpasses the combined reserves of the top five gold-holding nations, including the United States, Germany, and Russia.

Gold ownership in India is deeply tied to cultural and traditional practices, particularly during weddings, where it plays a central role. South India leads in gold ownership, contributing 40% of the country’s total reserves, with Tamil Nadu accounting for 28%.

For comparison, the United States holds 8,000 tons of gold, Germany 3,300 tons, Italy 2,450 tons, France 2,400 tons, and Russia 1,900 tons—together less than what Indian women own.

Tax laws further reflect the importance of gold in India, allowing married women to hold up to 500 grams, unmarried women 250 grams, and men 100 grams.

The World Gold Council’s outlook for 2025 predicts continued growth in global demand, influenced by geopolitical uncertainties and sustained central bank purchases. India remains a key driver in the global gold market, with its cultural affinity for the metal continuing to shape global trends.
