AJK Govt Announces Subsidies On Flour, Electricity After Violent Protests

The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) government has conceded to public pressure, announcing a reduction in the prices of electricity and flour following days of violent protests. According to media reports, the decision follows approval of demands put forth by the Jammu Kashmir Awami Action Committee (JAAC).

Flour fight ends! AJK lowers prices

The price of a 40kg bag of wheat flour has been slashed by Rs.1100, bringing it down from Rs.3100 to Rs.2000.Electricity rates have also been revised. Domestic consumers using up to 100 units will now pay Rs.3 per unit, while those using 101-300 units will be charged Rs.5 per unit.

Consumers exceeding 300 units will pay Rs.6 per unit. Similar tiered pricing structures have been established for industrial consumers.

In a press conference, AJK Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwar ul Haq addressed the public concerns. He acknowledged the government’s understanding of the situation and commitment to responding to the “public mandate.” Haq assured the public that the government had no intention of suppressing peaceful protests.

The move comes after days of unrest in AJK. Protests erupted over rising food and electricity prices, leading to clashes with police that resulted in casualties and injuries.

The AJK government received financial assistance from the federal government to address the crisis. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif previously approved the allocation of Rs.23 billion to alleviate the hardships faced by the people of AJK.
