Apple Supplier Faces Backlash For Refusing Jobs To Married Women In India

Source: Forbes/World Atlas

A Reuters investigation has exposed discriminatory hiring practices at Foxconn, a major supplier of Apple devices. The report alleges that Foxconn systematically excludes married women from assembly jobs at its iPhone plant in Sriperumbudur, India.

This practice blatantly violates both Foxconn’s and Apple’s official codes of conduct, which prohibit discrimination based on marital status.

According to the investigation, married women applying for jobs at the plant were rejected due to the company’s belief that they have “greater family responsibilities compared to unmarried counterparts.” Furthermore, the report reveals that Foxconn used justifications like “more issues post-marriage” to exclude these women.

The investigation gathered information from over a dozen Foxconn hiring agencies across India, with many former and current employees speaking on condition of anonymity.

These allegations cast a shadow over Foxconn’s labor practices in India. It remains to be seen if Apple, which champions ethical sourcing, will take action against its supplier in response to this report.
