Bangladesh Court Issues Arrest Warrant for Ex-PM Sheikh Hasina

Source: Khaleej Times

A Bangladeshi court has issued an arrest warrant for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been in exile since August after being removed from power by a student-led revolution. Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam announced on Thursday that the court ordered Hasina’s arrest, requiring her to appear before the court on November 18.

Hasina, 77, has been accused of overseeing widespread human rights violations during her 15-year rule, including mass detentions and extrajudicial killings. The charges against her involve atrocities committed in July and August, according to the prosecution.

Since fleeing to India, Hasina’s whereabouts remain unclear. Bangladesh has revoked her diplomatic passport, and under an extradition treaty between the two nations, she could be returned to face trial. However, the treaty allows for refusal if the offense is deemed political.

The court’s decision marks a significant moment in the ongoing investigations of crimes related to her time in power.
