In a groundbreaking move towards inclusivity, Bangladesh has unveiled its first mosque tailored for the transgender community. It marks a significant stride towards acceptance and religious freedom.

Located in Mymensingh, just north of the bustling capital Dhaka, the Dakshin Char Kalibari Masjid for the Third Gender stands as a symbol of progress and unity in the predominantly Muslim nation.

Breaking Barriers for the Third Gender

For years, transgender individuals faced discrimination and exclusion from mainstream mosques. Still, this newly constructed sanctuary offers a haven where they can practice their faith without fear of judgment or ridicule.

Community leader Joyita Tonu, her voice echoing with pride and emotion, emphasized the profound significance of this milestone, declaring, “No one can deny a hijra (transgender) from praying in our mosque anymore.”

The establishment of this mosque aligns with Bangladesh’s recent efforts to recognize the transgender community as a third gender officially. However, despite these strides, transgenders continue to confront challenges in securing fundamental rights and societal acceptance.

The Dakshin Char Kalibari Masjid for the Third Gender aims to challenge these barriers by offering a place where transgender individuals can worship “like any other people,” as expressed by the mosque’s imam, Abdul Motaleb.

Already, locals like Tofazzal Hossain have embraced the mosque, dispelling misconceptions about the hijra community and acknowledging their devout lives. Bangladesh’s pioneering initiative sets a precedent for inclusivity and acceptance, resonating far beyond its borders and inspiring many to envision a more inclusive world.
