Bangladesh’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, has resigned and left for India in a military helicopter, according to various sources, including the army, the high commission in Delhi, and media outlets. This follows massive protests in Dhaka, where thousands of demonstrators stormed her official residence, demanding her resignation.
Channel 24 broadcast footage of protesters entering the Ganabhaban Palace, overturning furniture, smashing glass panels, and taking various items, including books and even a live chicken. Journalist Yeasir Arafat reported from inside the palace, describing significant damage caused by over 1,500 protesters.
A source close to Hasina said the 76-year-old leader departed Dhaka with her sister for a safer location and was unable to record a farewell speech due to the chaos.
The unrest comes after weeks of anti-government demonstrations, which escalated as student activists defied a nationwide curfew to march to Dhaka. Internet access across Bangladesh was heavily restricted on Monday following the deadliest clashes in over a month, resulting in nearly 100 fatalities on Sunday and raising the overall death toll to at least 300.
