Rishi Sunak, the UK Prime Minister, and his wife, Akshata Murty, have seen their wealth rise by £122 million in the past year, as revealed by the Sunday Times Rich List. The couple’s fortune now stands at £651 million, substantially increasing from £529 million in 2023.

Rishi Sunak outranks King Charles!

This impressive gain is primarily driven by Akshata Murty’s shares in Infosys, the Indian IT powerhouse co-founded by her father. Consequently, the Sunaks have now surpassed King Charles III in personal wealth. The King’s fortune has seen a more modest increase of £10 million over the last year, bringing his total to £610 million.

Previously, Charles III held a higher ranking than the Sunak family on the wealth list. The Sunaks had already surpassed the personal fortune of the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, with her wealth estimated at £370 million.

While the exact personal wealth of monarchs is often complex to determine due to the inclusion of vast estates and palaces, the overall wealth of the monarchy is estimated to be in the tens of billions.

Mr. Sunak became the first active politician to appear on the Sunday Times Rich List in its 35-year history when he featured as Chancellor in 2022, with his family’s wealth then valued at £730 million. Before his political career, Mr. Sunak amassed significant wealth as a hedge fund manager, reporting £2.2 million in income, earnings, and capital gains in his latest tax summary.

The couple’s notable wealth largely stems from Ms. Murty’s Infosys shareholding, valued at £590 million last year. Downing Street has declined to comment on Mr. Sunak’s current position on the Rich List, describing it as a “private family matter.”
