Justin Sun, a Chinese-born cryptocurrency entrepreneur, grabbed global attention by eating a banana from a $6.2 million artwork he purchased last week. The controversial piece, titled Comedian by Maurizio Cattelan, features a banana duct-taped to a wall and was auctioned at Sotheby’s in New York.
Sun consumed the fruit during a press conference in Hong Kong, likening the artwork to cryptocurrency, highlighting its abstract value and symbolic significance. “Eating it at a press conference can also become a part of the artwork’s history,”Sun remarked, calling the banana“much better than other bananas.”
The banana in Comedian is regularly replaced for exhibitions. Previous instances of the fruit being eaten include stunts by a performance artist in 2019 and a South Korean student in 2023, neither of whom paid for the act.

Sun’s fascination with the artwork reportedly stems from its parallels with digital assets like NFTs (non-fungible tokens). Both, he noted, derive value from public perception rather than intrinsic worth.
At the event, each attendee received a banana and duct tape as souvenirs, adding to the spectacle. Sun, who runs the Tron blockchain network, recently disclosed a $30 million investment in a crypto project linked to Donald Trump.
