In the war-torn landscape in Gaza, a couple exchanged vows, casting a glimmer of hope and joy across a community burdened by loss. A video from the beautiful event is doing rounds on social media, portraying the strong hopes and will to survive of the people of Gaza.
A wedding to remember
Undoubtedly, the Gaza wedding brought happiness to the displaced family from Rafah. This is also the first wedding in the family’s household. Plus, it is also the first in the whole of Gaza since the war with the neighboring territory Israel broke out.
As per media reports, Palestinian groom Mohammed al-Ghandour wanted to give his bride the dream wedding but after the war started, it wasn’t possible. As they had to flee their homes at the time, the couple finally got married earlier this week in the tent city where they now live.
Ghandour led his wife Shahad by the hand towards the tent decorated with some colored lights and a mirror with a gold-colored frame with a few relatives escorting them. “I wanted a party. I wanted a celebration, a wedding. I wanted to invite my friends, my relatives, and my cousins as anyone would”, said the groom.
The couple is from Gaza City in the north of the tiny enclave where some of Israel’s heavy bombardment and the clashes with Hamas have taken place. However, the intended grand celebration was downscaled to a small gathering of relatives. The bride and groom along with their relatives had managed to flee from Gaza to Rafah.

For a wedding feast in an enclave that the UN warns is heading towards famine, the couple had only a few snacks in plastic packages. Shahad’s mother led a small group of women ululating in celebration along with some tunes via a portable music player.
