Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani neuroscientist who has been imprisoned in the United States for over a decade, recently had a long-awaited meeting with her younger sister, Dr. Fauzia Siddiqui. This meeting, facilitated by Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan, took place at the Federal Medical Center in Carswell, Texas.
Here’s what Senator Mushtaq Ahmed Khan posted:
As per Senator Mushtaq Ahmed Khan’s tweet, the meeting was far from ideal. Dr. Fauzia was not allowed to hug or shake hands with her sister. She was also prohibited from showing Dr. Aafia pictures of her own children. The encounter took place inside a jail room, with a thick glass partition separating them.
Dr. Aafia, dressed in a white scarf and khaki jail attire, shared the harrowing details of the daily torture she endures. She expressed her longing for her mother and children, unaware of their mother’s passing. Additionally, Dr. Aafia suffered physical ailments, including missing front teeth due to an attack in prison and hearing difficulties resulting from a head injury.
This meeting served as a poignant reminder of the continued hardship faced by Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, highlighting the urgent need for justice and resolution in her case.
