Meet Dr. Michael Ain Who Defied All Odds & Became World’s First Orthopedic Surgeon With Dwarfism

Dr. Michael Ain is a renowned orthopedic surgeon at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. However, Dr. Ain’s journey to becoming a surgeon was anything but easy. The reason being, Dr. Ain was rejected from several medical schools due to his short height.

An inspiration for many around the world

As per the details, Dr. Ain was born with a genetic disorder called achondroplasia, which caused him to have dwarfism. Growing up, Dr. Ain faced many obstacles and prejudices because of his height. Despite the challenges, he never let his condition hold him back from pursuing his dreams of becoming a physician.

However, Dr. Ain’s path to becoming a doctor was filled with rejections. He applied to over 20 medical schools and was rejected from almost all of them because of his height. This was a time when physical limitations were more significant factors in admissions decisions. But Dr. Ain did not give up; he persevered and continued to apply.

Finally, Dr. Ain received an acceptance letter from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He graduated from medical school in 1983 and went on to complete his orthopedic residency at the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Ain’s passion for orthopedics came from his personal experience with the challenges of living with achondroplasia. He decided to specialize in limb-lengthening surgeries to help others like him. He has been an advocate for people with dwarfism and has been involved in many research studies to find new treatments for the condition.
