Pakistan’s federal government has rejected a request from the Punjab provincial government to suspend social media platforms during the holy month of Muharram.
While the Punjab government had proposed a ban on six social media applications, including Facebook, TikTok, and WhatsApp, from the 6th to the 11th of Muharram, the federal government has prioritized strengthening security measures.
The Ministry of Interior has vowed to ensure foolproof security during Muharram by directing law enforcement agencies to intensify and improve existing security protocols. This includes mobile signal jamming in areas where religious processions and gatherings (majalis) are planned.
Earlier, the Punjab Home Ministry released Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for majlis during Muharram. These SOPs mandate the installation of walk-through gates at sensitive locations and outline a three-layer security plan for majalis venues.

Additionally, designated entry and exit points will be established; attendees will be screened with metal detectors, and car parking will be located away from gathering areas. The SOPs also emphasize the responsible use of loudspeakers and punctuality for gatherings.
Meanwhile, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will convene on July 6th to witness the crescent moon for Muharram al-Haram, marking the beginning of the new Islamic year.
