With his creative mind, Hussam Al-Attar rigged two fans he found at the scrap market to some wires and turned them into tiny wind turbines capable of charging batteries.By connecting the fans to wires traveling down through the house and using switches, light bulbs, and a thin piece of plywood extending out into the tent, he created a bespoke lighting system for his family.
The Al-Attar family is one of the many families who due to Israel’s assault on Gaza have been displaced, and they are now living in a tent in a crowded camp. Hussam’s invention has not only eased the suffering of his own family but also provided hope and inspiration to others in the camp. People in the surrounding area have called him “Newton of Gaza,” recognizing his ingenuity.
