The recent trophy hunting season conducted by the Forest, Parks, Wildlife, and Environment Department of Gilgit-Baltistan has generated a revenue of Rs.300 million. The hunting season takes place annually from November to April and is regulated by the Gilgit Baltistan Wildlife Act of 1975.
High bids for Astore Markhor permits!
In October of 2023, the department organized an auction that granted permits for hunting over a hundred rare species as part of its trophy hunting program. The permits included twelve blue sheep, eighty-eight ibexes, and four Astore markhors.
The Astore markhor, which is known for its majestic horns, received a lot of attention, with permits selling for high amounts–up to $186,000.
Bids for international hunting permits of blue sheep ranged from $26,000 to $35,000, with local hunters also bidding competitively. The highest permit prices for blue sheep and ibex were Rs.1,800,000 ($6,440) and Rs.1,100,000 ($3,935), respectively.
During the hunting season, 51 Himalayan ibex, six blue sheep, and 4 Astore markhor trophies were hunted, resulting in a total fee of Rs.309,351,708.

Out of this revenue, 80% is given to community-controlled hunting areas, while the remaining 20% goes to the government. Furthermore, 20% of the government’s share is allocated to enhancing wildlife habitats. While the rest is invested in local development projects.
The hunting season has been a significant source of income for the region. With the funds generated being utilized for community development and wildlife conservation.
