Girl Who Escaped Child Marriage Tops Intermediate Exams In Andhra Pradesh

G. Nirmala, a student from Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district, has emerged as the top performer in the 1st Year Intermediate Exam despite facing several challenges. She has shown remarkable resilience and determination in overcoming the odds stacked against her.

Nirmala was once at risk of being forced into child marriage, but she refused to give up on her dreams.Not only has she excelled academically, but she also has ambitious aspirations of joining the Indian Police Service (IPS).

From child marriage escapee to IPS topper!

Nirmala, hailing from the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) in Kurnool, a residential school catering to disadvantaged sections. Despite facing adversities, she managed to score an impressive 421 out of 440 marks in the AP Inter 1st Year Exam 2024, capturing hearts with her determination to excel.

Currently, Nirmala is being widely admired for her aspirations to become an IPS officer with YSRCP legislator Y Saiprasad Reddy praising her unwavering dedication to education. During a community outreach program, she expressed her desire to pursue higher studies and asked for support which ultimately led to her admission to KGBV, Aspari.

The Ministry of Education also acknowledged Nirmala’s extraordinary achievement by extending congratulations and admiration through social media. Their tweet highlights her remarkable journey, from overcoming the threat of child marriage to emerging as a beacon of academic excellence and social justice advocacy.
