On Monday, Information Minister Atta Tarar announced that the government intends to file a case to ban Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) party. This move follows recent decisions by the Supreme Court that provided relief to PTI in the reserved seats case and to party chief Imran Khan in the Iddat case.
The Supreme Court’s judgments have positioned PTI to emerge as the single largest party in the National Assembly, potentially disrupting the ruling coalition’s two-thirds majority. This development has prompted significant concern among the coalition’s members.
Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, Tarar emphasized that the government’s decision to ban PTI is crucial for the country’s progress. He argued that the presence of PTI is a hindrance to moving the country forward.
Tarar also revealed that the government plans to submit a review petition to the Supreme Court against its recent verdict. The court had ruled that PTI would be eligible for reserved seats for women and minorities, a decision that has significant implications for the political landscape.
