The Guardian has questioned Imran Khan’s suitability to become the next Chancellor of Oxford University. The former Prime Minister of Pakistan, who is currently imprisoned, has applied for the position, sparking a debate over his controversial views and actions.

In its article, The Guardian highlights Khan’s past comments that could conflict with Oxford’s values. It points out that Khan has been described as “Taliban-friendly,” having praised the Taliban for “breaking the shackles of slavery” and excusing their ban on women’s education.

He has also reportedly refused to condemn Osama bin Laden as a terrorist, referring to him instead as a “martyr.” Additionally, Khan’s past remarks on women and rape have drawn significant criticism.

The newspaper argues that these views are at odds with the principles of academic freedom, gender equality, and inclusivity that Oxford University upholds. The debate around Khan’s candidacy intensifies as Oxford prepares for its online vote in October to elect a new Chancellor.

Critics believe his election could harm the university’s reputation, while his supporters see it as an opportunity for fresh leadership. The outcome remains uncertain as the university community considers its options.
