As the Islamic month of Ramzan continues, Muslims around the world are observing the holy month by fasting from sunrise to sunset. Little did everyone know that Neelam Gokulsing, a Hindu expat from Mauritius currently residing in Dubai has been fasting every year since she first moved to Malaysia in 2021.
Honoring diversity with solidarity
According to Neelam, fasting during Ramzan has helped her to understand the difficulty of going without food and water when one needs to work. “It is a challenge, but it is also an opportunity to empathize with those who are less fortunate and who regularly go without food or water”, she said.
This year, Neelam has been fasting alongside her Muslim friends and colleagues in Dubai. She wakes up early in the morning to have a pre-dawn meal before the start of the fast and breaks her fast with dates and water at sunset.
“I have been welcomed with open arms by the Muslim community here in Dubai, and I feel honored to be able to share this experience with them”. “It’s a beautiful example of how people of different faiths can come together in the spirit of solidarity.”, Neelam shared.

By taking part in the fast alongside her Muslim friends and colleagues, she is not only showing respect for their religion but also gaining a deeper understanding of Ramadan and especially fasting. As we continue to navigate a world that is often divided by religion and culture, Neelam’s example serves as a reminder of the importance of finding common ground and working together towards a shared goal.
