ICC Faces Major Financial Impact if Pakistan Boycotts Matches Against India

Source: Cricket Pakistan

Pakistan is considering a strong response to India’s refusal to participate in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan, potentially boycotting ICC events held in India if sports and politics remain intertwined. This stance, supported by the Pakistani government, could have significant financial and operational effects on the International Cricket Council (ICC) and global cricket.

Historically, Pakistan has shown flexibility by participating in ICC events in India and helping both the ICC and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) manage broadcasting commitments. However, following India’s recent decision to skip the 2023 Asia Cup in Pakistan, the Pakistani government is contemplating a complete ban on matches against India in ICC tournaments if political strains continue to affect sports.

Reports now suggest that if Pakistan declines the hybrid model proposed by the ICC, South Africa may be chosen as the alternate host for the 2025 Champions Trophy. A boycott by Pakistan could weaken ICC’s revenue streams, as India-Pakistan matches consistently attract record viewership. The 2023 World Cup clash drew 173 million viewers on Indian TV and 225 million digital viewers, showcasing the immense financial impact of these matchups on ICC’s broadcast and sponsorship deals.
