Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari has suggested that social media apps should be blocked if they cannot be effectively regulated.
Frustrated by the prevalence of fake content online, she stated, “Social media platforms are making money in Pakistan but are not accountable to anyone. If they cannot be regulated, they should be shut down.”
During a press conference on Monday, Bokhari highlighted that social media is regulated worldwide, yet Pakistan has not implemented similar measures.
Her comments follow recent statements by Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, who claimed that the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) was banned due to national security concerns, not to limit freedom of expression.

Bokhari emphasized the importance of regulation, saying, “The social media cannot be run without regulation. Whenever we talk about regulation, the issue of freedom of speech comes into play.”She expressed her ongoing struggle with a personal case of fake content, noting that the Federal Investigation Agency has limited capacity to address issues with social media apps.
