Imane Khelif Makes History with Welterweight Gold at Paris 2024 Olympics

Algeria’s Imane Khelif made history at the Paris 2024 Olympics by winning the gold medal in the women’s 66 kg welterweight boxing category. The 24-year-old secured a dominant 5:0 victory against China’s Yang Liu, marking a significant achievement despite ongoing controversy surrounding her gender.

After her win, Khelif firmly addressed the disputes, stating, “I am a woman like any other woman. I was born a woman, lived as a woman, and competed as a woman.” This statement comes after the International Boxing Association (IBA) disqualified her in 2023 for failing a gender eligibility test, a decision later dismissed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as “baseless,” allowing her to compete.

Khelif’s victory is a testament to her resilience, as she faced intense scrutiny leading up to the Olympics. Speaking to the media, she expressed hope that future athletes won’t face similar challenges. “We are here to perform as athletes,” she asserted, celebrating her hard-earned success and Olympic dream.
