Would Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi Have Been Released If The Iddat Case Verdict Was Different?

Source: The Express Tribune

In a major development, a district and sessions court in Islamabad on Thursday rejected pleas from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, seeking suspension of their sentences in the iddat case.

Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Afzal Majoka announced the verdict, which had been reserved earlier in the week on Tuesday.

This decision follows an earlier directive from the Islamabad High Court (IHC), which had instructed the session court to announce its verdict on Bushra Bibi’s plea for suspension of her conviction in the Nikah case within 10 days. The Nikah case had resulted in a seven-year jail sentence and a fine of Rs.500,000 for each of the couple.

Bushra Bibi had approached the Islamabad High Court to contest the conviction handed down in the Nikah case. Her legal team argued for the suspension of the conviction, which they believed was unjust. Despite these efforts, the district and sessions court upheld the original sentences.

In response to the court’s decision, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has announced plans to challenge the dismissal of the pleas by Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi. The party is preparing to take further legal action in an effort to overturn the convictions and secure the release of the couple.
