In recent development, Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar has emphasized the need for political maturity, urging the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership not to conflate judicial matters with political agendas.

Speaking to a private TV channel, Tarar clarified that the government cannot intervene in the £190 million case involving former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Tarar explained that clemency for Khan rests solely with the President, citing Article 45 of the Constitution, which grants the head of state the authority to pardon individuals.

“If Imran Khan submits a mercy petition to President Asif Ali Zardari, the president could exercise his right to grant clemency,” he stated. The minister also noted that judicial precedents support this constitutional provision.

This statement follows an Accountability Court ruling that sentenced Imran Khan to 14 years in prison and his wife, Bushra Bibi, to seven years in the £190 million case.

Delivered by Judge Nasir Javed Rana at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, the decision also included fines of Rs.1 million for Khan and Rs.500,000 for Bushra Bibi, with additional prison terms for non-payment.
