In recent news, the Madras High Court has ruled that Muslim police officers in Tamil Nadu can grow beards while on duty.

This landmark decision came after Constable Abdul Qadir Ibrahim faced disciplinary action for maintaining a beard. Justice L. Victoria Ghori cited the 1957 Madras Police Gazette, which allows Muslim officers to keep beards as part of their religious practices.

The court highlighted the importance of respecting India’s diverse religious customs and stated that the police department cannot punish officers for following their faith. This ruling sets a significant precedent for religious freedom within the police force.

The issue began in 2018 when Constable Qadir returned from Hajj and requested additional leave due to illness. The Assistant Commissioner denied his request and objected to his beard, filing two cases against him for not returning to duty. The High Court has now dismissed these charges, affirming the right of Muslim officers to grow beards.

This decision ensures that Muslim police officers can observe their religious practices without fear of punishment, reinforcing the importance of religious tolerance and freedom in India.
