Indian Men Killed In Ukraine Were Forced To Fight For Russia: Families Say

Source: The Express Tribune

Several Indian men, enticed by promises of employment opportunities found themselves embroiled in the conflict in Ukraine. Much to the shock and dismay of their families back home. Mohammed Asfan, hailing from Hyderabad, initially set out to Russia with hopes of a job as a mere “helper” in the army, only to tragically end up on the frontlines of the Ukraine war, ultimately losing his life there.

Indian government’s take on the matter

Asfan’s story is not an isolated one; numerous other Indian men fell victim to similar deceptive recruitment tactics, lured by the prospect of lucrative jobs, only to be coerced into combat against their will. The Indian government has assured that it is actively addressing these cases, advocating for the swift repatriation of those trapped in such dire circumstances.

One such victim, Hemil Mangukiya, a 23-year-old embroiderer from Gujarat, met a similar fate. After being attracted by a misleading YouTube recruitment video promising employment and residency in Russia. Tragically, Hemil’s family learned of his demise only after he had already been killed in action. Leaving them in a state of grief and uncertainty as they await his return for final rites.

The plight of these men underscores the urgent need for stricter oversight of overseas recruitment practices. Mainly to prevent vulnerable individuals from falling prey to exploitation and violence. As efforts continue to repatriate those ensnared in this ordeal, it serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers lurking behind false promises. And the importance of safeguarding the well-being of migrant workers abroad.
