The U.S. Justice Department announced charges on Friday against an Iranian man, Farhad Shakeri, accused of being involved in a plot to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump. The plot was reportedly ordered by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC).
According to the Justice Department, Shakeri, who resides in Tehran, informed U.S. law enforcement that he was assigned on October 7, 2024, to create a plan for Trump’s assassination. Shakeri, however, allegedly stated that he did not intend to follow through on the IRGC’s timeline.
Shakeri, 51, was previously deported from the U.S. in 2008 after a robbery conviction. He is currently believed to be at large in Iran. Prosecutors also charged two New York residents, Carlisle Rivera and Jonathan Loadholt, who reportedly assisted Shakeri in targeting a U.S. citizen of Iranian origin, identified as a known critic of Iran’s government.

Rivera and Loadholt are being detained until trial, with legal representatives for both yet to comment. The target is thought to be journalist Masih Alinejad, who has previously faced threats.
