Reports are emerging that the Congress party in India is considering nominating tennis star Sania Mirza from Hyderabad for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. According to a financial publication, former Indian cricket captain and Congress leader Mohammed Azharuddin, who has familial ties with the Mirza family, has proposed Sania’s name for the candidacy.
Sania Mirza’s political debut?
As per sources, an Indian political party is planning to nominate Mirza as a candidate against Asaduddin Owaisi, the chief of All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Political analysts suggest that Congress, which has not won from Hyderabad since 1980, is hoping to capitalize on the popularity of the former national tennis player to regain its lost position in the electoral landscape of the southern Indian state of Telangana.
As a female from the minority community who previously served as the ambassador of Hyderabad under Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS), Mirza perfectly fits the bill. With its rich cultural heritage and diverse demographics, the Hyderabad constituency has had a stronghold of Owaisi-led AIMIM.
However, the recent resurgence of the Indian National Congress has posed a significant challenge to the party’s dominance in the upcoming electoral battle.

It is noteworthy that Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi won the Hyderabad seat as an independent candidate in 1984. He later won the seat from 1989 to 1999 as an AIMIM candidate. Asaduddin Owaisi has continued this legacy since 2004. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he contested against 14 candidates and won the seat by securing 58.94% of the total votes.
The Lok Sabha elections for 543 parliamentary constituencies will be held in seven phases, starting from April 19 and ending on June 1. In contrast, Telangana is scheduled to conduct its voting process on May 13 in a single phase.
