Jay Shah Set to Become Youngest ICC Chairman In History Replacing Greg Barclay

Source: Sporting News

Jay Shah, Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is poised to become the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), succeeding Greg Barclay. Sources confirm that Barclay will not seek a third term, as he informed ICC directors, including Cricket Australia’s chair Mike Baird, during a video conference. Barclay’s decision follows Shah’s planned candidacy, with Shah receiving strong backing from cricket boards in England and Australia.

Shah, the son of India’s Home Minister Amit Shah, will become the third Indian to lead the ICC, following Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar. His official term will commence in December after Barclay’s tenure ends.

Current ICC regulations require a simple majority of nine out of 16 votes for election. Shah’s candidacy has widespread support, making him a likely successor. The nomination deadline is August 27, 2024. At 35, Shah will be the youngest ICC chairman in history. He will continue as BCCI Secretary for another year before entering a mandatory cooling-off period in October 2025.
