Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has introduced a temporary tax relief initiative to help citizens cope with rising costs. Starting December 14, all food, snacks, and select essentials will be GST/HST-free until February 15, 2025. The measure aims to ease financial pressure on households and make essential purchases more affordable.
Qualifying items include groceries, restaurant meals, prepared foods, children’s clothing and toys, books, and even Christmas trees. For example, a family spending $2,000 on these items could save $100 on GST alone, with additional HST savings in provinces like Ontario.
In addition to the tax break, working Canadians earning up to $150,000 in 2023 will receive a $250 rebate in spring 2025 under the new Working Canadians Rebate program. This initiative is expected to benefit 18.7 million people, offering direct financial relief.
Minister Jean-Yves Duclos emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting middle-class families during challenging times, especially as inflation and living costs weigh heavily on budgets.
