In recent news, local fishermen in Karachi hit the jackpot with a rare catch of hundreds of Sowa fish. The group of fishermen caught these rare fishes near Keti Bandar which could be worth up to 1 billion rupees. The Sowa fish is known for its scarcity and high demand which commands prices in millions.
From rags to riches in a single catch
According to Kamal Shah, head of the Coastal Media Centre in Ibrahim Hyderi, the Golden Sowa is a male fish weighing around 50 to 60kg. Each fish sells for Rs.1.25 million for its stomach fat and the group caught around 5,000 fish which will easily fetch around 3 billion rupees.
The fishermen, including Hanif Haqqa Jatt, Hajairo Jatt, Yousuf Khaskheli, Siddiq Jatt and Ghulam Katiar, out on a fishing expedition in 15 boats, hit the jackpot.
The Sowa fish is found in Karachi’s waters around this time of the year to feed on little fish and also breed and lay eggs near the shore. The Sowa fish is extremely expensive because of the layer of fat fibers around its gut. It must be obtained from a live one or a very fresh piece to make sutures or surgical thread.
