Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Introduces Charges For Underground Water Usage

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) announced a new regulation charging for underground water usage. This comes after a gazette notification outlining the implementation of a digital water metering system across Karachi.

The system, starting August 1st, aims to monitor and regulate the extraction, use, and sale of groundwater. Metering will apply to commercial entities, industries, educational institutions, hotels, and multi-unit residences. Individual houses, however, will be exempt.

Mayor Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, anticipates this initiative will generate an annual revenue of 1 billion rupees and address water theft concerns. He highlighted the immense water consumption in Karachi, with over 550 million gallons supplied daily. The new metering system is expected to improve water management and potentially reduce costs.
