Hundreds of workers at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) went on strike late Tuesday, protesting a planned takeover by India’s Adani Group. The workers, led by the Kenya Airport Workers Union, oppose the $1.85 billion deal, which would lease the airport to Adani for 30 years. The union argues that the agreement could result in job losses and worsen employment conditions. The strike has left passengers stranded, with flights grounded or delayed.
The Kenyan government, which supports the deal, says the agreement is crucial for modernizing the airport. The proposed upgrades include the construction of a second runway and a new terminal. However, critics claim that leasing the airport would deny Kenya future profits from the facility, which contributes over 5% of the nation’s GDP. The strike continues despite minimal operations resuming on Wednesday.

The High Court has temporarily halted the deal following a case filed by the Law Society of Kenya and the Kenya Human Rights Commission. Workers vow to maintain their protest until the agreement is scrapped.
