Lahore, the capital of Punjab, has been ranked as the most polluted city in the world, according to data released by IQAir on Tuesday. The city’s air quality index (AQI) has crossed the 400 mark, indicating hazardous air conditions, which is the worst possible level.
Environmental experts say that healthy air measures below 50 on the US AQI scale. Lahore’s current air is 80 times more polluted than a healthy level. According to environmentalist Yasir Husain, the main contributors to the city’s smog are agricultural waste burning, vehicle emissions, and power production.
In winter, the slower wind speeds trap polluted air, combining it with fog to create dangerous smog. This results in Lahore’s air quality reaching hazardous levels, posing severe health risks.

The IQAir data ranks New Delhi as the second most polluted city, with an AQI of 285, followed by Dubai, where the AQI is 166.
Provincial authorities in Lahore are working to address the smog crisis as the air quality continues to worsen.
