In a landmark moment in the annals of Pakistan’s judicial history, the Supreme Court of Pakistan, led by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, has allowed live telecast of proceedings pertaining to a set of petitions challenging the SC (Practice and Procedure) Act 2023.
All 15 judges in favor
This contentious law seeks to regulate the suo motu powers of the country’s top judge. This historic decision marks the first time that the full court of the apex court, comprising all 15 judges, has permitted live broadcasting of its proceedings. The hearings are being broadcast live on state television PTV.
The apex court declared the petitions seeking a full court hearing admissible, a decision made during a full court meeting. Chief Justice Isa emphasized that the arguments in the case would begin afresh due to the formation of a new bench.

‘Keeping the doors to justice open’
To facilitate the live broadcast, the courtroom and visitors’ gallery were equipped with cameras. Chief Justice Isa’s emphasis on keeping the doors to justice open underscores the significance of transparency and public access to judicial proceedings.
This momentous decision not only promotes transparency and accountability but also sets a precedent for open and inclusive judicial processes in Pakistan. It represents a significant step forward in the nation’s legal system, as it embraces the principles of democracy and public engagement.
