In latest development, New York City police have arrested a man suspected of committing a horrific crime: setting a woman on fire as she appeared to sleep on a subway train. The victim, whose identity is still being investigated, was seated motionlessly on an F train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station in Brooklyn when the attack occurred.
According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), the suspect calmly approached the woman, used a lighter to ignite her clothing, and then exited the train car as flames engulfed her. Officers on patrol in the station rushed to the scene, using fire extinguishers to douse the fire. Unfortunately, the woman was pronounced dead by emergency responders.
The suspect was apprehended after three high school students recognized him from widely distributed surveillance images and police body cam footage. The arrest drew praise from New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who commended the public’s role in aiding the investigation, calling the crime “one of the most depraved acts one person could commit against another.”
