Massive Explosions in Syrian Coast After Israeli Air Strikes on Military Sites

Source: Daily Express US

Israeli airstrikes have targeted Syria’s coastal Tartus region, resulting in colossal explosions that reportedly registered as a 3.0 magnitude seismic event. The strikes are described as the heaviest in the area since 2012, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The airstrikes targeted key military locations, including air defense units and surface-to-surface missile depots. Tartus, home to one of Russia’s two military bases in Syria, saw massive secondary explosions, indicating the storage of large volumes of armaments.

Dramatic videos circulating online show a bright flash followed by a mushroom cloud of smoke. Experts suggest the explosions were powerful enough to be detected 820 kilometers away in western Türkiye, traveling faster than a typical earthquake signal.

The strikes raise questions about the future of Russian military assets in Syria, including the naval base at Tartus and the Hmeimim airfield. Satellite images indicate Russia has temporarily abandoned Tartus after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

The attacks come amid a turbulent period following an 11-day offensive that overthrew Assad. The United Nations and other international voices have expressed concern over the ongoing violence in the region.
